Our Statewide Creative Writing Contest Awards for Mainers in Recovery

6pm, Thursday, July 28th, 2022

Together Place Peer Run Recovery Center hosts an annual statewide creative writing contest for Mainers who identify as in recovery. Entries are submitted to a three-judge panel which decides who will be published in our annual Periscope Creative Writing chapbook. The panel also selects finalists to be considered by our guest author, who each year selects first, second, and third place awards which include cash prizes.

Who:

  1. Our guest author is Edward Crockett, author of The Ghosts of Walter Crockett. This memoir describes Crockett’s life growing up with a mother who said, “Don’t be like your father” as he tried to rise above a family cycle of alcoholism and poverty. Mr. Crockett, now a Maine State Representative, will read from his book.
  2. Our three honored writing contest awardees are presented awards by guest author Mr. Crockett and are welcomed to read from their winning pieces.
  3. Others published in Together Place’s annual Periscope Creative Writing chapbook are welcome to read from their published pieces after the awards.
  4. The public is welcome!

Where:

Together Place Peer Run Recovery Center, 2 Second Street, Bangor (the place with the giant murals of Maine historical figures on the corner of Union and Second).

Any Maine resident who identifies as being in mental health and/or substance use recovery may submit to our next annual Periscope Creative Writing Contest.
Indeed, one of our judges, Hank Garfield, will be offering a workshop in Creative Writing once a week beginning Wednesday, September 21 at 10am at Together Place (with zoom access as well). Mr. Garfield is an author of five books. The workshops run for six weeks, Wednesdays at 10am.

One need not join Together Place’s Creative Writing Workshops to be eligible to submit for next year’s contest — but it can help! Together Place Peer Run Recovery Center offers many recovery groups facilitated by Certified Intentional Peer Support Specialists, who are themselves in long-term recovery and who are trained in both mental health and substance use recovery. Our welcome desk is 941-2897.
